Peking Opera Theater of Yunnan Province
The Peking
Opera Theater of Yunnan
Province was set up in June 1960 as amalgamation of the National Defense
Peking Opera Troupe, Yunnan Grand Theater and the Peking Opera Troupe of
Laboring People. The first president of the troupe is Liu Kuiguan, and his
successor is the famous Peking Opera artist Guan Sushuang. The current president
is Zhang Shuyong.
In the past decades, the theater has created, rearranged and put on the stage
many outstanding repertoire programs, enjoying high reputation both in China and
abroad. While inheriting and developing the fine tradition of Peking Opera, the
theatre also endeavors to reflect regional culture as well as the history and
modern life of ethnic minorities in Yunnan Province in the form of Peking Opera.
The repertoires include Tongtianxi, The Romance of Iron Bow, Fighting at
Hongzhou, Stealing Money from the Treasury, Ahei and Ashama, Dainuo, Peacock's
Gall, Dosha Abo, Washan Mountain in the Mist, Nadixiu and Feng Yilan. Among
these, The Romance of Iron Bow was shot into a film by Beijing
Film Studio which won the Hundred Flowers Award and the Golden Discs Award in
the category of Dramatic Art Films; The Bloody Stone Table in Southern Frontier
won Wenhua Award for New Plays and Wenhua Award for Directing at the First China
Arts Festival; Lost Dream and the Cold Tombstone won the 7th Wenhua new
repertoire and acting awards. The new program by the theatre Feng Yilan received
sweep success in the Third China Peking
Opera Festival at the end of 2001.
The Theater has been invited to visit France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland,
Liechtenstein, Finland and Sweden. Wherever the Theater appeared, it received
high praise and warm welcome from audience.
Principal artists of the Theater include: Zhang Suyong, Zhou Mingyi, Hu
Chuhua, Su Baokun, Wang Xiaolin, Wang Yuzhu, Su Baojing, Wang Ling, Lu
Mingsheng, Dong Runan and Wu Yongsheng.
