The Peking Opera is reputed as the National Opera in China for its outstanding artistic feature. China Peking Opera Festival is a national level art gala, with numerous performances of classic works of the Peking Opera and renowned actors and actresses gathering together. The festival is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Broadcasting, Film and TV, and Peking Opera Art Foundation of China, and is jointly organized by the local government.

The festival aims at exhibiting excellent Peking Opera works, promoting exchanges among outstanding artists, attracting the masses, and promoting the development of of the Peking Opera. Besides the appraisal of new and old plays, the festival also holds seminars and on-the-spot performances, making a contribution to the spread and development of the Peking Opera.

First held in 1995, China Peking Opera Festival is held every three years. Up to 2001, it had been successfully held three times.
