Outdoor Sculpture and City Life

Outdoor sculpture, with the earth as its floor and the sky as its ceiling, highlights the unique characters of a city and records the history of a nation.

Examples include Pis Mannekin, the sculpture of a little boy urinating that has become Brussels’s beloved symbol. He was hero, saving the city in the 14th century.

Carved from the bedrock of the Giza plateau, the Sphinx is truly a mysterious marvel from the days of ancient Egypt. The body of a lion with the head of a king or god, the sphinx has come to symbolize strength and wisdom.

Urbanization and a rising number of public places has led to a boost in outside art and provided more space for public sculpture.

Monuments, memorials and civic statuary are perhaps the oldest and most obvious form of officially sanctioned public art. Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.
