STAGE

The National Theater Company of China stages the modern drama Ming, which draws inspiration from the story of the emperors of China's Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to narrate the Skakespeare masterpiece, King Lear. As the first performance of the 2008 Beijing International Drama Festival, the play includes elements of traditional folk arts, cross-talk and even taichi.

Netherlands Dance Theater I, founded in 1959, is one of the top dance ensembles in the world. The upcoming performance in Beijing includes Wings of Wax, Speak for Yourself and Signing Off.

The Peony Pavilion, the classic Kunqu Opera, is onstage at the Imperial Granary, a perfect venue. The Imperial Granary was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) 600 years ago, exactly the time the Kunqu Opera was written. In order to further emphasize the origins of the Granary and the opera, the entire show will take place without the benefit of electricity.

The Chinese Acrobatics Group, established in 1950, has toured more than 80 countries, won numerous international awards and helped foster friendships between China and other nations. Its performance includes traditional acrobatics, a circus show, magic, old Beijing folk plays and more. The show blends music, dance, local opera and martial arts.

CONCERTS

Led by Francesco La Vecchia, the Rome Orchestra of Italy is coming to Beijing. Established in 2002, the orchestra comprises nearly 100 outstanding musicians who have performed throughout the world. The Beijing program will have Johannes Brahms' Symphony Orchestra No 4, Gioacchino Rossini's William Tell Overture and Ottorino Respighi's The Pines of Rome.
