China Olympic Committee (COC) is a nonprofit national sports organization that is aimed to promote the Olympic spirits and develop sport. It is the legal organization that representsChinain International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The main tasks and functions of COC are: to promote Olympic sports inChina, to organize Chinese sports delegations to participate in summer and winter Olympic Games sponsored by the IOC; to provide necessary funds and sports equipment for the sport delegations; and to assist other national sports organizations to hold sport competitions and sports meetings.
The COC will abide by the Constitution, laws and regulations, and other national policies, and respect the sports ethics. The COC has been doing a great job in promoting Olympic sports inChina.
According to the IOC's Olympic Charter, COC is authorized to use the Olympic names, symbols, flags, mottoes, and anthems in sports events and activities related to Olympic Games and Olympic sports hosted byChina. The COC also has the responsibility to protect these names, symbols, flags, mottoes and anthems from illegal usage inChina.
The first sports organization ofChinawas founded in October 1910 and was recognized by IOC in 1922. After the founding of the New China in 1949, the legal status of China Olympic Committee of the New China was reaffirmed by a resolution that the 49th Session of IOC passed inAthensin May 1954.
However, in the 16th summer Olympic Games in 1956, some IOC officials tried to allowTaiwanto send a delegation to the Games under the preconditions of "two Chinas". In response, the All China Sports Federation lodged protest to IOC. China Olympic Committee cut off its relations with IOC in August 1958.
OnNovember 26, 1979, IOC decided to resume the legal status of Chinese Olympic Committee through a vote by all IOC members. The Olympic committee in Taipei of Taiwan is regarded as a localinstituteofChinaand allowed to maintain its status in IOC under the name of "China Taipei Olympic Committee".
At present, members of China Olympic Committee are serving on various positions in the five special committees under IOC. China Olympic Committee member He Zhenliang has been elected as Vice President of IOC at the 95th Session of IOC onAugust 30, 1989. COC accepts the supervision and guidance of the China State General Sports Administration and the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
