Li Lishan, born inHong Kongin 1971, is one of the best women sailors inHong Kong. She fell in love with sailing at an early age and took part in her 1st sailing competition at the age of 17. One year later, she entered the Hong Kong Sports Academy to receive regular sailing training.
In 1990, she collected a silver in the 11th Asian Games held in Beijing. Three years later, she claimed the title in the World Sailing Championships. The following year, she was silver medallist in women's sailboard (Mistral) in the Asian Games.
In 1995, she finished 3rd in the World Sailing Championships and ranked 2nd in the event the next year. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Li grasped the women's sailboard (Mistral) gold, becoming the first HK athlete to win a Olympic gold.
After the event, she went to Australia to study sports management. In 1998, she was gold medallist in women's sailboard (Mistral).
The hard-training sailor has accumulated 6 Outstanding Athletes of Hong Kong awards, and was voted into The Ten Best Hong Kong Athletes in 1988-1998 in 1998. The following year, she won the special award in the Sports Star of Century vote co-sponsored by Chinese Olympics Committee, Foundation and Chinese Journalists Association.
