Sun Wen

 

Sun Wen, born on April 6, 1973 in Shanghai, is by far one of the best women soccer players in the world. In 2002, she was voted as the Co-Player of the Century, sharing the honor with American, Michelle Akers, by soccer's governing body, FIFA.    

She has a good vision, passing accuracy along with a wide range of movement in the front and middle of the field. And she has played for China in more than 100 matches and scored over 100 goals.

Sun Wen began to play soccer at the age of 12. In 1990, she entered the national team. Ever since then, she has led China to four championships in the Asian Cup, in 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997.

She and her teammates also won China gold medals in women's soccer in the 1994 and 1998 Asian Games. She also played in the 1991, 1995, and 1999 Women's World Cups earning a 5th, 4th, and 2nd place. In the 1999 Women's World Cup held in the United State, she as awarded the Adidas Golden Boot and Golden Ball award.              

Sun took part in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in 1996. In 1998, she led China to finish 2ndat the Goodwill Games.

In 2001, Sun went to the US to play for the Atlanta Beat in the WUSA.
