In the past, both Maonan men and women liked wearing blue or black jackets either buttoned down the front or on one side. They abstained from wearing white clothes, because the local weeds were white. In the 19th century, women wore jackets buttoned on the right side with three black laces and trousers inlaid with red or black embroidered margins. They did not wear skirts, but wore embroidered shoes. Women loved to wear silver ornaments like bracelets, hairpins, necklaces and flowery bamboo hats, which were decorated with various patterns in the inner side and attached with cords woven with wools. Married women combed their hair in a bun.
After the founding of the new China, the majority of the Maonan people began to wear costume similar to the neighboring Han and Zhuang people.
