Pioneer of Chinese Neurosurgery: Wang Zhongcheng

 

Wang Zhongcheng, born on Dec 20, 1925, is a native of Shandong Province, China. He is director of the Beijing Neurosurgical Institute.

Wang graduated from the Beijing Medical College in 1949. Being the pioneer of Chinese neurosurgery, he initiated the examination of cerebral angiography in the 1950s, and finished the monograph “Cerebral Angiography,” marking great improvement of Chinese neurosurgery in diagnostic technique. He is the initiator of micro-neurosurgery in China.

As one of the most experienced specialists in the world in cerebral vascular malformation therapy, he performed one thousand of intracranial aneurysms surgeries. In the 1980s, he took the lead in clinical and basic research in brain stem tumor, and then in the therapy of intramedullary tumor. He performed nearly 1,000 cases of this surgery, both its quality and quantity being advanced in the world.

Now Wang is still directing the development of neurosurgery in China, and has gained great honors for Chinese neurosurgery. His sublime medical ethics, his exquisite skills, and his meticulous learning style are very impressive. He has published more than 300 articles and 30 monographs. He has gained 62 items of research achievements, including nine national awards, such as scientific and technological award of “Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation,” the national “Norman Bethune Medal” for medicine and health department, as well as the “international honorable award” bestowed by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Society.
