It is one of the famous Taoist temples in China, also known as Baiyun Temple. It is situated on the Baiyun Mountain in the Jia County of Shaanxi Province. It is said that there was always white cloud (Baiyun) wreathing the peak of Baiyun Mountain when Baiyun Taoist Temple was first constructed, so people called it as the Baiyun Temple after the completion of the construction.
Baiyun Temple was first established in 1605 during the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Its construction area was up to 81,000 square meters, so it was the biggest architectural complex in Northwest China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Baiyun Temple leans on the mountain and is close to the Yellow River. With Ancestor Zhenwu Hall as the center, some halls, pavilions, booths, towers and other buildings are distributed around it. There are many precious cultural relics of ancient times in Baiyun Temple, including more than 1,900 pieces of color frescos and a lot of sculptures and handwritings of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
After one enters the Taoist temple, the building that can be first seen is the memorial archway of timberwork with multiple pendentives, and its height is 12 meters. There are Wulong Palace and Ancestor Zhenwu Hall respectively in upward position. Wulong Palace is the bottom building, including a main hall, two corridors and Kwan-yin Tower, and the houses of these structures are elegant and well organized. Ancestor Zhenwu Hall is the magnificent main building of the Taoist temple, and it is also an important venue where the Taoists of the temple hold religious activities.
