Main Hall of Zhaoren Temple

The Zhaoren Temple sits on the East Street in Changwu County, Shaanxi Province.

Built during the Zhenguan reign (627-649) of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the temple was constructed for dead officers and soldiers after Emperor Xuanzong Li Shimin took the throne. The grand hall of the temple is three bays wide. Without using columns for support, the hall was built on a multi-layered arch structure, upheld by fourcorner girders. Such a structure is unparalleled in wooden architecture of ancient China. Other buildings, including the mountain gate, stele pavilion and the east and west wing rooms, were all built by later generations. There is also a well-preserved stone tablet from the Tang Dynasty with a 3,000-word inscription in the temple.
